The cost of using your mobile phone on holiday

Using your mobile phone on holiday is convenient, but do you know what it costs? The answer is a fortune. It even costs you to receive calls and sometimes to receive texts. Here is the low-down (or rather the high-down!):

Vodafone
A flat rate tariff for 32 European countries - making a call costs 60p a minute, receiving a call 30p per minute.

Calling home from the USA costs from 97p - £1.28 a minute, receiving calls from 66p to 84p a minute, depending on the State you are in.

O2 ( BT Cellnet)
The cost per minute of making calls - Western Europe & Asia 85p, Eastern Europe & the USA £1.37.

The cost of receiving calls per minute - Western Europe 94p, Eastern Europe 99p, USA £1.20, Asia £1.30.
Text messaging costs - Western Europe & USA 25p, Eastern Europe & Asia 30p.

Orange
Pay monthly - the cost per minute of making calls - Europe 60p, Australia & New Zealand 70p, USA £1.10, rest of the World £1.30.

Pay monthly - the cost per minute of receiving calls - Europe 30p, Australia & New Zealand 35p, USA 55p, rest of the World 80p.

Pay as you go - it would appear you can only use them in Europe - the cost per minute of making calls is £1.20, receiving calls 60p, sending text messages 40p, receiving text messages free.

T-Mobile (one2one)
Prices are dictated by the foreign networks. For example, in France it can cost anywhere between 48p and 80p a minute to make a call and 16p to 82p a minute to receive a call.

The best advice for this network is that you check the website not just for the country, but for the region you are visiting.

Virgin Mobile
The cost per minute of making calls - EU & Australia 55p, rest of Europe 65p, USA £1.

The cost per minute of receiving calls - Australia 20p, EU & rest of Europe 30p, USA £1.

Text messages - 30p to send and free to receive except in India and Kuwait!
